Flotsam

Some words go hand-in-hand with something else. They are identified almost exclusively with their corresponding thing… kit/caboodle, flora/fauna, Hall/Oates, zig /zag, Frosted Pop Tarts/Handle of Beam Eight Star Whisky. You know, the classics.

Flotsam and jetsam are two words that seem to be one in the same, but have slightly different meanings. While both nautical in nature, jetsam refers to items that were tossed off of a ship that’s in trouble, while flotsam is the “floating wreckage of a ship or its cargo.”

A good one to keep in your back pocket whenever the conversation gets stale at the party this weekend.
